The Algeria Monument Project

Students in Algeria are bringing ancient history into their communities through QR-powered monument guides

Algeria has gone through many different types of civilizations due to its location in the Mediterranean and North Africa. In Algeria many Phoenicians and Carthaginians established themselves in the coasts while indigenous people like the Numidians created their own kingdoms. Years later, Rome conquered a lot of the region which brought lots of roman architecture and culture while also mixing with the local traditions. Over time, other civilizations in Algeria like the Byzantine Empire, Islamic dynasties, the ottoman empire and France left behind monuments and cities that embody Algeria’s long history of cultural exchange.

Our QR codes are being placed at real monuments in Algeria, connecting visitors-on-site with student-produced historical resources.
